MFANTSEMAN MP, UNFPA LAUNCH INITIATIVE TO ELIMINATE FISTULA BURDEN FOR MOTHERS

The Member of Parliament for Mfantseman Constituency, Honorable Dr. Ebenezer Prince Arhin, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, has launched an initiative to provide free treatment and support for women suffering from obstetric fistula.

The initiative, launched at the Mercy Women’s Catholic Hospital in Mankessim, seeks to remove the financial burden that often prevents many women from accessing life-changing surgical treatment.

Obstetric fistula is a serious childbirth injury usually caused by prolonged and obstructed labour without timely medical intervention. The condition often leaves victims with severe health complications and social challenges.

Speaking during a visit to the facility, Honorable Dr. Prince Arhin said no woman should be denied treatment because of financial difficulties. He pledged his continued support to healthcare institutions and vulnerable patients within the constituency.

The Mfantseman legislator also visited the maternity ward of the hospital where he presented hampers and baby care items to mothers who had recently given birth. He assured them of his commitment to supporting maternal and child healthcare.

Country Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Dr. Emilia Naphambo, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to eliminating obstetric fistula in Ghana.

According to her, the UNFPA will continue to provide free surgical treatment, counselling services and financial assistance to affected women to help them regain their health and dignity.

She encouraged women suffering from the condition to seek medical care, assuring them that treatment remains available at no cost.

Medical Superintendent of the Mercy Women’s Catholic Hospital, Dr. Joseph Langah Berko, commended the MP and the UNFPA for their support.

He noted that one of the major challenges facing the fight against obstetric fistula is the stigma associated with the condition, which discourages many victims from seeking treatment.

Dr. Berko appealed to community members to help identify and refer affected women to healthcare facilities where they can receive professional care.

Some beneficiaries of the MP’s donation expressed gratitude for the gesture, describing it as timely and encouraging.

They thanked Honorable Dr. Prince Arhin for his kindness and support towards mothers and newborn babies.

The collaboration between the Mfantseman Member of Parliament, the United Nations Population Fund and Mercy Women’s Catholic Hospital is expected to strengthen efforts to eradicate obstetric fistula and improve maternal healthcare services in the municipality and beyond.
