MTN Ghana Targets Stronger Fibre Infrastructure in Massive $1.1B Digital Strategy

By Isaac Okyere

MTN Ghana is placing fibre expansion and robust network resilience at the center of its long-term growth plan, anchoring a massive US$1.1 billion investment designed to power the nation’s ongoing digital transformation.

Speaking at the MTN Media and Stakeholders Forum in Kumasi, executive leadership detailed how strategic infrastructure modernization, sustainable energy initiatives, and proactive security measures form the core of the company’s roadmap to enhance service delivery across the country.

As part of its 30th-anniversary commitments, MTN Ghana is directing a significant portion of its $1.1 billion capital expenditure over the next three years toward strengthening its core backbone. The strategy relies on an accelerated fibre rollout to extend high-capacity lines across both urban centers and underserved regions, guaranteeing faster and more reliable data speeds.

To complement this cable expansion, the company is upgrading its existing network architecture and constructing at least 500 new network sites by the end of 2026 to boost total capacity and eliminate congestion. Furthermore, MTN is building resilience into this physical network by integrating renewable energy solutions to power infrastructure, which reduces operational downtime caused by power outages while lowering the company’s environmental footprint.

”Future investments will focus on advanced technologies, stronger fibre infrastructure, and digital platforms to drive innovation, productivity, and economic growth,” said Angela Mensah-Poku, Chief Enterprise Business Officer at MTN Ghana.

Mrs. Mensah-Poku emphasized that as MTN evolves from a traditional mobile operator into a fully-fledged technology enterprise, robust fibre connectivity serves as the critical backbone for digital banking, enterprise services, and SME development.

Alongside physical network improvements, MTN executives highlighted strategies to safeguard the overall customer experience and protect the integrity of its commercial distribution network.

Addressing consumer protection directly, Nii Adotey Mingle, General Manager for MTN Ghana’s Northern Business District, issued a stern warning to authorized dealers charging above the official GH¢10 rate for SIM cards. Vendors found flouting regulations risk immediate revocation of their accreditation. Mr. Mingle appealed to the public to report extortion attempt to ensure fair and affordable access to network connection points.

To complement infrastructure reliability with digital safety, MTN urged subscribers to maintain high vigilance against rising cyber threats. Executives advised customers to never share PINs, passwords, or personal details with unverified parties, and to confirm any suspicious messages or calls through official MTN customer service channels before acting.

Subscribers were also cautioned against clicking on unverified links received via SMS, WhatsApp, or unfamiliar websites, noting that fraudsters continue to employ increasingly sophisticated methods.

Through sustained investment in high-speed fibre, financial inclusion via Mobile Money (MoMo), and targeted youth digital skills training, MTN continues to align its technical infrastructure with national socio-economic goals. With expanded fibre coverage, renewable power integration, and strict consumer protection policies, MTN aims to deliver a resilient network built to support Ghana’s digital economy for decades to come.
