The Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has presented relief items to students of the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) who were affected by the floods that hit Accra on 29th June 2026.
The items were presented on behalf of the Minister by Godwin Ako Gunn, Deputy Director of Communications for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Speaking at the presentation, Mr. Gunn said the Minister is aware that most students live on very tight budgets and are therefore severely impacted by such disasters.
According to him, the University Council Chair drew the Ministry’s attention to the plight of the affected students. The Minister subsequently appealed to agencies that regularly collaborate with the Youth Department, and they responded positively.
“We decided to support the students regardless of whether we are in government or not. We saw how the flood affected these students,” Mr. Gunn stated.
Receiving the items on behalf of the university, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of GCTU, Professor Ebenezer Malcalm, expressed his sincere gratitude to Minister George Opare Addo for the kind gesture. He, however, made a further appeal to the general public and corporate entities to come to the aid of the affected students.
“Many of our students have been badly affected. They lost laptops, food items, clothing, and other essentials,” Prof. Malcalm said. “We hope that whatever support the public gives will go a long way to help our students reorganize themselves and continue with their academic programs.”
The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) President of GCTU, Nathaniel Safo, also thanked the Minister and his team for the donation. He noted that the relief items would bring much-needed help to students affected by the floods.
“Most of the students lost their electronic devices, food items, and clothes,” he said. “We are appealing to the general public for more support to help them get back on their feet.”
