Residents and school pupils of Akyem Osiem Kyekyewre have been stranded after heavy rains caused one bridge to collapse and another to overflow, cutting the community off from the main town.

According to eyewitnesses, the main bridge collapsed earlier under pressure from the floodwaters. A second bridge nearby also overflowed because the volume of water was too dense for its structure to contain. Both bridges serve as critical access routes for traders, farmers, and students.
The incident has halted economic activity and disrupted schooling. Pupils could not cross to attend classes, while farmers and traders were unable to move goods to market.
In an interview the residents said they had reported the poor state of the bridges to the Municipal Assembly on several occasions, but no repairs were carried out.

“This has been a thorn in our flesh for years. Now both bridges have failed and we are completely cut off,” one resident said. “We are appealing to the President to intervene before the situation gets worse.”
With more rainfall forecast in the coming days, community members fear the isolation could worsen if urgent steps are not taken to restore access.
