The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana is calling on the government to use part of the GH¢300 million flood relief fund to support commercial drivers whose vehicles were damaged in the floods that hit Accra on Monday, June 29.
Speaking to the media, President of the Association, Paa Willie, said many drivers across major stations including Circle, 37, Kaneshie, VIP, Neoplan, and Accra Station had their engines and electrical systems destroyed after driving through flood waters.
“As a matter of urgency, we are calling on government to support drivers whose cars have become faulty because of the flooding,” Mr. Willie said.
“In this era of modern, electric vehicles, once water enters the engine the car is spoiled. Government must consider using part of the GH¢300 million released for flood victims to also support some of us drivers.”
He appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to meet with transport unions across the country and provide the necessary assistance to get the affected vehicles back on the road.
Mr. Willie also addressed public commentary that the President should have used a vehicle instead of a helicopter for his inspection tour of flood-hit areas on Monday.
According to him, the President took the right decision. “The helicopter helped him to locate every flooded area in Accra. It was the right direction,” he stated.
He commended President Mahama for his prompt response and for personally inspecting the extent of damage across the city.
The Association says without urgent support, many drivers will be unable to work, which could affect transport fares and movement in Accra in the coming weeks.
