Residents of Akyem Odumase Call for Government Action After Deadly Galamsey Incident

Residents of Akyem Odumase in the Abuakwa South Municipality of Ghana’s Eastern Region are calling on the government to mitigate the devastating effects of illegal mining, which has claimed several lives in the area.

 

The latest incident occurred on 14th June 2026 following a heavy downpour. At the time of filing this report, the victim had still not been recovered. Several nearby communities have also been submerged, with properties destroyed as a result of the flooding.

The community is urging immediate and strict government intervention to stop the menace. Meanwhile, officials from NADMO in Abuakwa South Municipality have been deployed to the site and are responding to the situation.
