Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has directed members of the House to stop abusing police escorts and sirens, warning that the practice undermines road safety and public trust in lawful authority.
Speaking in Parliament on Monday, Mr. Bagbin said the indiscriminate installation and use of sirens by individuals not entitled to them was eroding confidence in state institutions.
“The indiscriminate installation and use of sirens weaken public confidence in lawful authority and diminish the effectiveness of emergency and security services whose primary operations require priority access,” the Speaker noted.
He referenced a recent directive from Cabinet which states that no person shall install or use a siren on any private or public vehicle without authorisation.
Under the directive, the Ghana Police Service has been charged to remove unauthorised sirens and to discontinue unauthorised police escort services.
The Speaker urged members to lead by example and comply fully, stressing that road safety laws apply to all citizens, including public officials.
The move comes amid growing public complaints about the misuse of sirens and convoys in traffic, particularly during peak hours in Accra and other major cities.
